The Weather Channel Film Crew
Visits JSU Field Schools

After seeing a camera crew moving up and down the corridors of Martin Hall and following the nature camp kids around campus, folks began to call Renee Morrison to ask, “What is going on?”

“The Weather Channel crew is here to create a film about my son and his environmental education projects…they’ve chosen JSU’s Introduction to Nature Camp as their focus for an upcoming national show,” was her cheerful reply.

Renee’s son Joshua was chosen as a national eco-ambassador for The Weather Channel last year in Washington, DC. Last month he was notified that he’d be an eco-mentor for the new eco-ambassador group in DC this December. The film created today spotlights Joshua as the Southeastern United States “eco-hero” for a Forecast Earth grassroots-green show airing in August.

The film could have been about any of Joshua’s projects, but he chose to spotlight JSU Field Schools’ Kids into Nature Camps.

Why?

“JSU Field Schools touch the lives of thousands of children every year through environmental education and outdoor recreation. I’m honored to be a volunteer and wanted to give Jax State the publicity it deserves for having such great programs,” Josh explains.

The crew also interviewed Pete Conroy, Bob Davis (Anniston Star & Nature Camp Parent), Dr. Jonathon Herbert, Dr. Ted K,  Bobby Floyd (Camp Instructor) and several others.

Kyle Keyser and Jason Drakeford are the videographers and producers for the project.

“We are so impressed by what we’ve experienced here today…Josh is an amazing teenager and this camp is awesome,” said Kyle as he reviewed footage taken earlier in the day.

“I wish there had been a camp like this when I was a kid,” stated Jason with a grin. “Can I hold the snake?”

And he did.

GEEKs are honored by an email from author Richard Louv who says(paraphrased), "Thanks, Josh...(your words) are much appreciated as is your good work... an example of what young people can do.  I love your web site and the idea of your organization...thanks for what you’re doing."

Back in the day...Our parents played outside until after dark. They swam in the creeks. They caught lightning bugs and frogs...observed them and turned them loose with a blessing to prosper. It's not too late for us to have this kind of fun. You may laugh and say, "Why would we want to?!" But...don't mock it til you try it. Part of our inspiration to revisit nature for FUN and preservation comes from Richard Louv's book...if you haven't read it, our advice is to do so. We can be the generation that made a U turn back to the basics...back to a balance between virtual reality and what sustains all life...NATURE!

GEEKS at CAMP...

June 17 & 18
GEEKs Jamie and Joshua spent these two days volunteering with JSU Field Schools Inner City Kids Camp at Talladega National Forest. They worked with more than 60 children teaching them about environmental education and outdoor recreation. "Some of these kids said they had never been in the woods before. Some had never been swimming in a lake. Others had never met live animals...we saw a deer and they yelled BEAR!! It was awesome for us to see them light up and for them to learn so much," says Joshua Morrison.
